Dudley Zoo with Kids: An Honest Review, Costs & Tips for a Simple Family Day Out

We recently spent the day at Dudley Zoo and Castle, and honestly, it turned out to be one of those really easy, enjoyable family days.

Nothing over-planned.
Nothing overcomplicated.
Just simple… and exactly what we needed.

💷 How We Kept the Cost Down

We decided to take a picnic instead of buying food there, and it made a huge difference.

Days out can get expensive quickly, especially with kids, so this helped keep things manageable without taking anything away from the experience.

💡 Top tip: If you’re looking to save money, it’s worth checking apps like Kids Pass for discounted entry.

👶 Prams, Walking & Caddy Hire

My boys don’t use a pram anymore, but it’s worth knowing there’s a caddy hire option:

  • £20 deposit (refunded)
  • £12 hire cost

And honestly… I can completely see why people go for it 😅

There’s a lot of walking, and little legs will definitely feel it by the end of the day.

🦒 What We Actually Did

We didn’t try to rush around or tick everything off.

Instead, we just took our time:

  • Stopped to watch the owls
  • Watched people feeding the giraffes
  • Listened to talks about the female tiger and the penguins

It was such a hot day, and watching the penguins swimming…

we were all wishing we were in there with them 😂

🛝 The Play Area & Extras

There’s a newer play area at the top, behind the castle, and it’s definitely worth a visit.

It includes:

  • A proper playground
  • A large sandpit
  • Amazing views across the area

They were also offering face painting (£5), which is a nice little extra if your kids enjoy that sort of thing.

🎡 Ending the Day

We wrapped up the day with a few fairground rides and an ice cream before heading home.

We arrived around 10am and stayed until about 5pm, so it’s easily a full day out without ever feeling rushed.

⭐ Is Dudley Zoo Worth It?

I’d say yes — especially if you’re after a simple, family-friendly day out without pressure.

It’s not about seeing everything.

It’s about:

  • Taking your time
  • Letting the kids enjoy themselves
  • Just being together

And honestly, those are usually the days that matter most.
